They were there on the original design to dissipate the energy produced by current from the squirrel cage and the hysterisis in the iron core. None of that happens with permanent magnets. Gordon. BTW I passed up the opportunity of a 5.5kW 720RPM motor. This would probably be good as a conversion.Edited by GWatPE 2008-09-28 become more energy aware
