Merry Christmas to all here at TBS..!
I am trying to get a new 64 pin 470 based PCB going and can't seem to get the USB to respond... Programed with the new v5.04.08 firmware released today... I am using a micro USB type connector as shown here
I hooked it up assuming the pin out would be: Pin 1 - VBUS Pin 2 - D- Pin 3 - D+ Pin 4 - N/C Pin 5 - GND Frame - GND
The PCB is being powered OK from the USB port and programed OK on the PicKit-3 I have D- connected to pin 36 and D+ connected to pin 37 of the 64 pinner... As a test, I hooked up a USB to serial converter and TeraTerm does talk OK... Things seem to be connected correctly on the PCB.. But no go on the MM USB...
So, I wanted to check with someone here to make sure I selected the correct pinout for the USB connector footprint in DEX...
Thanks for any feedback on this..!! |

Pinout seems fine to me, so there should be no problems there. I just checked with Mr. Google's images, and that all seems fine.
On the 64-pin MM+ chip, do you have pin-34 connected to the USB 5v line? I think the MM+ needs to have that connected, so the MM+ chip knows you have plugged in the USB cable. If NOT connected, I don't think USB will respond..... Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Sorry G..
Just got back from diner...
Yep.. I got pin 34 as well as pin 33 on the VBUS line... I was going to use 33 as an easy way to check if the user has the cable plugged in the housekeeping loop...
You are correct in that I have not properly checked if the +5v is actually there... will do...
I did see about 3 something volts on the D- line and 0v on D+ (whatever that means)...
So, OK... Thanks again for the pinout check..!! One more thing off the list..
EDIT: - Voltage Check - OK... But Yikes, would you believe bad cable..!! Sho nuff.. - All seems good now...! OK... Onward and upward.. (you don't think I could have used a "charge only cable) Hey, it's zonk... Anything is possible... Didn't know I had one.. Hummm Edited by Zonker 2017-12-29 |

Zonker,
On my Explore 100 with a program running, I see a continuous series of pulses around 3.3V on both D+ and D- (pins 2 and 3 on the mini USB). Same for an Explore 64 with a micro USB with pin 1 reading 5V and pins 4 and 5 reading 0V Both measurements are with the USB's connected to a PC.
When disconnected from the PC, both D+ and D- are at 0V
Cheers, Doug.

I had my phones charger cable die on me(phone sliding back and forth on passengers seat pulled on the cable once too often I expect) and being a computer junkie, I have a box full of old usb cables of various types (it goes back so far it has db25 serial cables at the bottom...)
It took 4 goes to find one that actually works, at first I was thinking it was maybe the phone, luckily my gps and my vaper both use the same connector Nope.... 3 bad leads- all still sealed in unopened bags (plus the 4th dead lead in the car)
All of them are at least a year old, one I suspect is closer to 3 years- I am thinking that there may be an internal corrosion issue in the new/old stock ones, they are all from different manufacturers, different appearances and in every case (I started cutting them in half to test them) it was the micro end that had failed- the same one you have
I checked some of the older style ones and every one I tested works ok, it only seems to be these micro pin ones not the bigger ones- maybe they use some kind of crimp/pressure connection that corrodes instead of solder?
anyone else had a large number of failures on these usb plugs? |
