Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

lizby said  Ah, right. In the U.S./Canada a "drive" for a residence might imply a longish stretch, as for an estate. Most houses would have a "driveway".

Great but does anyone know why we park on a Driveway and drive on a Parkway ?
and maybe someone can explain why it is in the UK they drive on the left side of the Road, and once I leave Texas I have to drive on what's left of roads?

Ah ha, I think I detect a Texas accent there. Good old Texas, the land of miles and miles of miles and miles. The place where the electric grid is not connected to anywhere else.

Texas roads are better because they usually don't have to resist frost heaving. If they did they would find that their concrete is inferior. Texas doesn't have everything ... among other things they don't have stone. Parker Brother's Aggregates in Houston has been mining oyster shells from the bottom of Galveston Bay since 1866. They use it in place of stone when mixing concrete! I spent a good part of 1996 in Port Bolivar replacing the bottoms of a bunch of Parker Brothers tug boats. Parker Brothers had been bought by CEMEX, a Mexican corporation, which cause all their boats to loose their US flag status. I bought a bunch of the boats as an American citizen, turned them upside down, replaced the bottom 3/4 inch skin, and resold them as US bottoms. The new Parker Brothers continued mining oyster shells by chartering their old boats back from individual american citizens  who had bought them from me or directly from the original Parker Brothers. Admiralty Law is very interesting, convoluted stuff.

The limeys hereabouts will tell you that they drive on the correct side of the road!

In 1747 Dr. James Lind, a passenger on a ship on a long voyage observed that many of the deck hands had swollen gums, fatigue, and were losing teeth. He diagnosed scurvy and prescribed oranges and lemons. The vitamin C cured the scurvy. Lime juice was later found to last longer on a sea voyage than oranges or lemons and provided adequate vitamin C. That's how come Brits are known as "limeys" here in the states.
