Well, it is supposed to hurt. Is part of the emulation process.

I think there is a market for a real retro computer all-in-one (except screen) with games on cartridge. Our dream is to succesful to do a real C64 or real MSX or a real Colecovision (console)

(Very expensive the Pandora !)

> Which is what the Olimex Duinomite sorts out. (Hardware uarts etc.)

That's why I replaced ColorMaximite with Duinomite.....for baudrate
to drive midi-synth

> I dont't want to support Linux...
> it's crazy, nobody in the world try to create Basic OS ?

Dos with QBasic screams on new PC's
(they will boot dos becaused it's used to reflash bios)

Wasn't there an Atari games-box thing not that long ago, essentially running an emulator and a whole heap of the old cartridge games, all built into the one unit?

I seem to recall it was an official product. Atari Retro or something like that?
Will have a little hunt for it now...

Lads,

I think its the ATARI Flashback

I saw one advertised in a flyer or an ad somewhere in the last month or so.

Mick

Commodore died "recently" again, after some revival efforts.
Disney tried to give a helping hand.
But today, the site is dead.

So Grogster, I think you won't find a thing.

And for the Aussie enthusiasts, you can always buy a new Microbee.
For the rest of the world, the Microbee was a Z80 based PC. I still have mine in the shed somewhere.

I did my research before to make a all in one retro style computer based on the CMM.
There was almost zero interest.

The CMM and others in the maximite family can better be marketed as embedded controllers (as that is what they are).

The FUZE comes close but is just way to expensive. If they could knock of 100 pounds of the price it would be interesting.

To be honest, I would have liked a Commodore Vic slim

But the "slim" bellow (can't remember which brand it was) is more appealing. Too bad it is not available right now!

just some musings...

the "FUZE Basic" is a commercialisation of an interpreter written by a fellow called Grordon Henderson. the free version is discussed and available here:
https://projects.drogon.net/rtb/

throwing this onto a Raspberry Pi version A should give you a working system for very little outlay. with a little tinkering, it should even be possible to make it jump straight into the basic interpreter upon booting, though i don't know if that would offer sufficient control over file management and other tasks that may crop up.

this is a problem with any 'simple' shell operating over the top of a complex underlying operating system - at some point you may need to do something that requires dropping down to the os, and when you get down there everything will be foreign.

while the MicroBee was quite an accomplishment in the day (i do have one stashed away somewhere), it did so at the expense of some quite clever compromises. to save on expensive memory, graphics were implemented through a programmable character generator. and available i/o isn't a patch on what the maximite or micromite offer. plus i have a strong suspicion that the source code to the basic interpreter is long lost.

the new release of the MicroBee puzzles me a little. it is like a space shuttle bolted on the back of a biplane. the core board now contains a massively more powerful processor, and one wonders why the Z80 still needs to be there at all.

i would like to see something emerge like a dual-processor maximite, with one processor dedicated to producing 1024x768 and 800x480 graphics, while the other processor just runs the basic interpreter and issues graphics commands. this would be an elegant design without excessive underlying complexity. oh, and i'd like to see the "maximite dual" core board (the SMD components only) available cheaply for hobbyists to build their own personalised machine around.

just my 2 cents worth!

Yes, that was the thing I was trying to remember the name of.

Yes, that is a very cool idea. Not sure that there are any multi-core PIC or other microcontrollers about are there? I thought that multipule cores were really only for CPU's for running a GUI type OS - I'm probably wrong on this one.

The "Everything major in the one chip" idea of MaxiMite is a great idea, and also fantastic for simplicity, but even in the days of C-64's Atari 8-bit's, ZX Spectrums et el, the mainboard was split up - a CPU chip surrounded usually by proprietry chips to do other things like CIO, Video, Sound etc....

Perhaps the likes of the Gamedunio chip and associated parts, fed from a MM chip, all on the one board? Other then a quick look, I know nothing really, about the Gameduino, but it may not be that complicated to drive it - perhaps I should have a quick look at it's command set etc, just for interest sake. In this connection, recently I came across this: http://www.jcwolfram.de/projekte/avr/chipbasic2/main.php
Looks like it's been around for a while before the first 'mite...
Wondering has anyone tried it out?

Although I am trying to learn German, I think you will have to help me and others with a translation for that page!

There is that thing called "Google Translate". It worked well for me with that page...

Not for me!

You might have a toolbar with that option - for me, it just shows as it shows, and there is no translate button or link to English.

Go to the web site in question. Get the url, go to Google Translate, insert the url and it will be done.

this is apparently a computer dedicated to a homebrew basic ?

I can also see a ZXSpectrum Emulator :
