Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

This forum is great for new ideas and ways of implementing video/keys/sensing etc for projects.

But what in the members view is the best solution for a car based project requiring a screen and keypad or touchscreen interface that can be controlled by a MM

Now we have had lots of e-bay micro tft's that look like phone rejects.
Also the ASCII VT1100 Terminal which is good but needs a screen and the buttons/keys.
We have a multitude of 20x4 lcd and button solutions.

But what about for a more long lived professional looking dash mounted project requiring a decent case, with parts that aren't e-bay surplus that won't become impossible obtain in a few months.

What would people use and why? Grateful for any ideas.

If it is in use while driving you need physical buttons. A Touchscreen is very difficult or impossible to use while driving.

What kind of functionality are you thinking of.
There are lots of screens and buttons that will be available for years. Just don't use eBay.

Screen capable of ten lines of text x 30-40 chr long.

Care to give some links to screens you would consider?

A touchscreen should be OK but you need to avoid some modern GUI things such as swipes.

Various cars have touchscreens and they're easy enough to use when driving. They do indeed avoid gestures etc.

Link does not work for me.

I think there is a rouge dot there at the start of the URL.....

This one should work.Edited by Grogster 2014-12-29

I should add...

For use in a car the big issue is that looking at a device or paying it any kind of attention is very dangerous. As I'm sure everyone knows it's people failing to concentrate on the road that causes accidents.

The UK ignored evidence that hands-free mobile phones were as dangerous as held ones and frankly has made a complete mess of its road safety.

Whatever the intended usage please don't add to accidents!

On top of that you would be held accountable in many countries.
When used while driving interaction should me the absolute minimal. Reading is too distracting. One two words combined with color is ok. A short glance should be enough.
10 lines of text would only be allowed while parked.

@ twofingers: Bitte schön. (you are welcome)

I would have to also agree with the consensus of use in a car.

Here in New Zealand, we have seen a huge amount of crashes involving foreign drivers lack of attention to the different road system here. Failing to give way, lack of understanding of our road rules, failing to keep left, driving long distances on the right(till they hit someone coming the other way) - it's not good, to say nothing of putting some gadget in front of them(or anyone, for that matter), which could result in......

.....an unfortunate incident.

Take the horrific crashes that can be caused by someone who is texting on their cellphone while driving - an insanely stupid thing to do, but you'd be surprised how many people do it. It is illegal here in NZ to text while driving, but the scary thing is that we had to introduce a law to say as much - you'd think you shouldn't need to be told that, eh? (rhetorical)

OK 10 lines of text was a number plucked out of the air.

Lets make it a 20x4 lcd type display with buttons etc which is no different to your car stereo type display.

It's actually quite lawful to have a screen on view (in the UK anyway) which gives you information about the vehicle, which is my intended use.
It's not an entertainment device. It's like Torque / Scangauge or similar OBD devices.

This sprang to mind.

Quite expensive but compact and well speced.

We use them all the time. The crystalfontz screen last a long time.
Their pricing is absurd though.
Like for a standard 2x16 display:
quantity/price
1 10 20 50 100 200 500 1000
$22.96 $11.82 $9.82 $8.10 $7.12 $6.36 $5.50 $5.00
We were lucky we had a large order so we could get the 1000 piece price.
And then they are still more expensive then their competitors for single pieces.
But the quality and now proven MTBF is great.
