I am finishing my USB-Serial project and would like to give away a few with the request to use them and test them.
They are PIC16F1455 chips in a 14 pin DIP package, i'll add a through hole mini USB with it too if you want. They will be preprogrammed ready to go.
Only extra component needed is a cap 10-47uF.
It can be used for USB-Serial AND as a programmer for PIC32 chips.
To use it as a programmer pic32prog is needed (look for the thread about it). The PIC16F1455 will execute the commands given by the pic32prog to physically toggle the pins in the right sequences.
It can program a PIC32MX17F256 in about 35 seconds!
I am also working on making it program other ranges of microchips, the 16F1455 is among them.

A generous offer TZA but I would never trust the South African Post Office to deliver it
I would like to know the part number and supplier of the Through Hole Mini USB connectors though. I have not been able to find any in SA and non of the local distributors appear to know that they exist, if I can give them part numbers they may be able to source them for me.

Local electronics shop.
It is a part from GTK (UK) but discontinued. The local electronics shop still has a few thousand of them so i am good. :)
The through hole connectors are disappearing from stocks as it is all SMT.
Still like the through hole better because it has a much stronger connection with the board. Specially for prototyping product that is a must.

I am adding some code to blink a led to have some visual indication. Adding the code to also programm a pic16f1455 hit a problem, so i rolled back to a pic32 programm function only. Tonight i will do the final test.Microblocks. Build with logic.

Its not that I don't trust ebay, I don't trust the post office.
If something is cheep and nice to have but not important then its ok, but I have lost far too many expensive or needed parts in the post that I now have to use a Currier service for any parts I can't source locally. That normally ends up being $30 shipping for a $2 part and is not viable
Africa is beautiful but unfortunately third world.

OK. The software is stable and i am programming the HEX file into the chips at this moment. For testing purposes i added some LED indicators.
Monday they will go in the mail.
During the week i will post a simple schematic on how to use the chip. So check this thread for updates.

Here is the promised schematics on how to connect the PIC with all the parts.
Not sure when the packages arrive but normally it is around 10-14 days.
The package containes a PIC16F1455 DIP, a pushbutton, 2 Red LEDs, 2 1N4148 diodes, 330 Ohm Resistor and a mini usb connector.
You will need a voltage regulator for making 3.3v, or a power supply that has that voltage available. Also a capacitor 4.7 to 10uF. A small breadboard and some wires.
The PIC is preprogrammed. If you have a micromite or other 'mite' with a serial console the you can test it right away.
If you want to program a PIC32 chip you will need to download pic32prog.exe. A thread about pic32prog is also on this forum and has links.
Schematic:
It will start in USBSerial mode. By pressing the button you can change the mode to PROGRAMMER, MONITOR, CONFIG and back to USBSERIAL.
The LED's will inform you which mode is active and it will also send a text with the mode to the USB.
I used a little trick to show 4 different states with 2 LEDs and only one pin on the pic.
The pin is either an output or an input. When it is in input mode then both LEDs are off. When the pin is configured as an output it can be LOW or HIGH. In both cases one of the LEDs will be on. The last mode is switching rapidly between LOW and HIGH which will light both LEDs at the same time.
The extra 1N4148 diodes are used top drop the voltage so that when the pin is in input mode the LEDs are off (or very very dim).
The 330 ohm resistor makes sure not to much current will go through the LEDs.
