I came across this video about removing components from PCBs. Looks like some good tips for getting out those larger components.

desoldering components

He mentions rework flux, is that just liquid flux or something special.

if i was just striping components from boards then just a tub of Rosin would be fine
and a lot cheaper

Thanks for the post, that looks great. Getting multi pin components out is a difficult job at times that method makes it look easy.

I will have to start using this method - it is way better then my old method.

Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Yes, this is a technique I've used over the years, and works very well. Far less destructive than walking a multi leg component off the board.

Thanks for posting that link, at last somebody who knows how to do a decent youtube.

I use a variation of his to unsolder big multipin parts.
I have an older style 60W barrel heater Weller soldering iron where the tip barrel is a 10mm diameter hole.
A 10mm piece of brass had a M6 thread turned on its end to replace the original tip. (why brass? its what I had and it does not appear to solder itself at the thread, easy to unscrew once the tip is cold)

Various size copper bars, 3mm thick and M6 tapped in the center can be screwed onto that brass tip.

I chose one that can heat all pins at once and proceed heating them as in the video.

Rather than waiting for the part to drop out I assist by pulling a little to shorten the heating time.

Cleaning the holes with a solder sucker works better if the sucker is applied at the component side and the iron tip at the solder side.

Now I have to get some of that liquid resoldering flux so I can try his solder wick idea too

Hello All
Great channel, defiantly will help with future projects.
Does anyone know how to make flux that flowing or what to add to flux to get in more fluid.
The stuff I have from jaycar is a pain to use either not enough or to much is clumps.

i just place a couple of blobs in the area im working on then when i preheat the board it just flows like a liquid.
