If I have a 24battery bank (2x100Ah) and a 24V device with small batteries (2 x +-5Ah batteries in an electric scooter), can I charge the device by just pluggin it into the battery bank, or will that damage things? If so, would I need some sort of circuit like a current limiter between the small device and the battery bank?

G'day South Easter,
If both primary and secondary batteries are of the same type (flooded lead acid) then I don't see a problem in spite the size, but if they are different, say the secondary are gel cell then you will need some sort of current limiting and I believe it won't top up to the same voltage level as your flooded lead acid either.

I'm not real flash on battery types.

What type of batteries do you have?
And do you have manufacturers data like the scooter owners manual that may show charge rates?

was working fine... til the smoke got out.

I was under the impression that to fully charge a 24V battery you need in the order of 26V.

This seems unlikely to happen with another large battery in parallel.

If the 100% charged instead of 90% charged is an issue I am uncertain.

I have no experience in using batteries in parallel so this information should be confirmed.
