Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I have been giving this whole design concept a bit more thought.

A software driven system might create a significant obstacle for some people, whereas a completely hardware solution may be a lot easier for others to duplicate from just the schematic.

Another difficulty will be the switching inductor. Powdered iron toroids can be difficult to source, and difficult to wind. I will see if I can adapt an already available commercial part that can be purchased ready wound.

If this is going to be a success it needs to use very easy to source parts.

Cheers,  Tony.

Glen
This question was asked and I have waited for a reply since.
  Gill said   Glenn,
How are you going to space the arrangements on both stators? I can't see any balanced arrangement there, but maybe you have a trick up your sleeve? [end Quote]

Is it possible for you to do a quick colour diagram of the two stators and how the 6, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, fit in a balaced fashon.
If you could use pictures like you produced in this case,
http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/FPRewire.asp
That would be very helpfull.
I am very interested in copiing your great ideas again.

Hi Brett

Ok, here are the drawings. This is exactly how I re-configureed the stators, ends up with 4 new 3 phase circuits, each with a different start voltage and current capability.

Hope that gets you started. You could use just one of these on a single stator windmill, top one would be better. The 5 pole would give power in light winds, then the 3 poles once the wind gets going.

Thank you Glenn, the top one I will use for the 80 series. Maybe with your blades. I think together is a complete solution for low winds, and deserve a separate page on your site.

I think, the second one is good for 100 series?Edited by vasi 2007-10-12

Here is an even spaced stator for the 6 + 4 x 2
Sorry the graphics are not up to Glenn's quality.

was working fine... til the smoke got out.

Yeah Vasi I do plan to add a page dedicated to the staggered stator in the next few weeks. Mine is working great, this afternoon when I got home there was a light breeze, not even enough to drive the southern cross windmill, but the F&P windmill was running and the thing was still making just over 1 amp! Hopefully there is some strong winds this weekend so I can see what sort of peaks I get.

Hi Glenn ,, been following your "staggered" concept with interest.
Have you got any results from light ,moderate and strong winds ,,so far?

I am wondering what wire size would suit best overall?

Great idea Warpspeed and Gizmo! As warp has said, with an Amp measuring thingy and a Picaxe with PWM, the MPPT problem should be laid to rest once and for all times!

Have Picaxe, have Allegro Hall effect Amp chip and should be able to supply the software. This up-down hunting algorithm has been suggested many times before, where the Amp measurements drive the PWM output.

All it needs is a separate subroutine to Glenn's PICLOG. Let's resurrect the MPPT discussion based on the Warpspeed/Gizmo comments. But, PLEASE, no muddying of the waters by suggesting larger props, capacitors, variable pitch and other goodies.

Sorry Bruce for butting in! Warp brought up MPPT again and I immediately had to say something!

That's ok Dom.. Was a bit hasty,sorry..

I'll call Glenn.. but if anyone else has results from staggered windings ,I'd like to know..

I'm sort of ,,,questioning myself about my 48v gennie..Thinking 24v may be the best???.

Hi Bruce,

I think Dom should check when Tony posted[last October].

I think F&PwithPVC has been working on the 80 series rewires. I am not sure of the new stators though. Gordon.

Hey Bruce

Sorry didn't reply, been away for the last few days. Up to the Cairns district, man thats a beautifull part of Australia!

I dont have any figures on the best staggered stator combination to use yet, but for 48 volts I would try somthing like 8/6 for each phase, so one string of 8 poles and another of 6 poles, each with their own bridge rectifier of course. It will cut in a lower RPM on the 8 poles, then if the wind increases the 6 poles will cut in to increase the amps.
On a 24 volts system, try a 6/4/4.
Its still early days for this sort of reconfiguration, but it holds promise. Does anyone know the RPM/Volts per coil for the 60, 80 and 100 series? If we know the voltage per coil per RPM we can work out a combination of staggered connections to suit a RPM range.

hi guys,
i just tried the 5/3/3 for a 12v system, this did better than the old 3phase 7poles (3/7). cut in was low about 60 to 80 rpm and the mill sat on 12.55volts and up to 1 to 1.5 amps. but rpm does not higher than 150 , maybe needs decogging. the 3/7 would spin up to 270 and up to 6amps.
maybe ill get more power for it in low winds, from the 2 stators.

Has anyone done any more work on this topic or has it gone the way of the dodo. I like the Idear of staggered windings but it seams to have gone quite.

Hello All,
In wiring the new stators (36 pole) staggered.

what wiring possibility would seem best suited for 12 v system.

Thanks.
