in my haste i bought one of the cheap ebay controllers https://goo.gl/Z8n8oj

a) do they work ok?
b) can i somehow add a dump load eg an electric heating element?

This is for a HAWT system with 12v treadmill motor.

Hi Druist, it appears that you cannot connect anything to that controller, maybe you could consider somthing like this Xantrex controller?,or somthing similar, its a bit more usefull for what you need

Yea I used one of these controllers on my other older turbine when it was running into batterys, worked well,
Im sure there are other makes of controllers out there that are probly better, but I never had a problem with my xantrex controllers.
And they are usually not too expensive to buy.

That is not a wind turbine controller , it is only a over voltage protection or dump load control that sees battery voltage and dumps it to a resistor if to high . You will still need rectifier and dump resistor .
It will work and is a very simple device, These days there is a lot better out there but again depends on our budget.
