This web site is mostly about windmills, as windmills are one of the cheapest ways to make your own clean electricity. In fact the web site was once called "DIY Windmills". Most of the windmills show here at The Back Shed are based on the motor from a Fisher and Paykel washing machine. These motors are very easy to find here in Australia and make excellent windmill generators.

Disclaimer......

Windmills can be dangerous if not constructed carefully. While the windmills shown here are designed to be strong, I have no control over the handyman capabilities of others and therefore offer no guarantee of safely. I recommend ......

  • You obtain engineering approval for any windmill you build, especially the tower and footings.
  • Don't place your windmill where a failure could cause injury.
  • Obtain local government approval.

Improving those cheap Chinese Windmills.

The cheap import Chinese windmills are popping up everywhere, and you can buy the blades separately, but they are very noisy! There are two parts to this article, firstly how I modified the blades to give more power and make less noise, and secondly, how a forum member, Kevin, modified the windmills to improve tracking and reliability.
