Site News.

  • 12th October 2008. Started the redesign of the site, there will be some strange looking pages while I clean up the text styles.

Disclaimer......

Windmills can be dangerous if not constructed carefully. While the windmills shown here are designed to be strong, I have no control over the handyman capabilities of others and therefore offer no guarantee of safely. I recommend ......

  • You obtain engineering approval for any windmill you build, especially the tower and footings.
  • Don't place your windmill where a failure could cause injury.
  • Obtain local government approval.

Improving those cheap Chinese Windmills.

The cheap import Chinese windmills are popping up everywhere, and you can buy the blades seperately, but they are very noisy! There are two parts to this article, firstly how I modified the blades to give more power and make less noise, and secondly, how a forum member, Kevin, modified the windmills to improve tracking and reliability.

If you have a question, and cant find the answer here, then try posting your question on the Forums page where I know you would get a reply in no time at all.

The web site is mostly about windmills, as windmills are one of the cheapest ways to make your own clean electricity. In fact the web site was once called "DIY Windmills". Most of the windmills show here at The Back Shed are based on the motor from a Fisher and Paykel washing machine. These motors are very easy to find here in Australia and make excellent windmill generators.

Rule of thumb..
" There will be absolutely no wind for several days after you have finished and erected your first windmill! "
