Insurance can and probably will walk away.  Many are happy with that arrangement and to take responsibility for their own handy work.   Most mass produced things are made as cheaply as possible. Someone building something for themselves has a vested interest in it and are far more likely to ensure it's built to a higher standard than the bare minimum acceptable in a commercial product.   Seems to be one of those things that a lot of unfounded fear mongering and internet wives tales are based on though.
