I'm older than dirt. I've got seven of these things. One of them is three feet long! Most of them are basswood Keuffel & Essers or aluminum Picketts. If you're designing a switchable voltage divider to control the gain of an op amp you set the slide once and read off all the proportional resistor values without any further fooling around. They were very efficient for many tasks.
