A grid tie inverter will send power back into the batteries whenever solar power exceeds the load on the system. That needs some care if overcharging is to be avoided, but there are ways around that. This bi directionality also works for highly reactive loads. Very high out of phase reactive current can surge back and forth without any problems at all. Excellent for starting large induction motors !!
