Simple, fewest possible parts, easy to diagnose and repair, and cheap enough to just throw away if necessary. The KISS principle definitely applies. If someone wants to add extra monitoring, alarms, data logging, and a whole lot of fancy extra control and display features, that can be done completely external to the basic functional inverter block.
