PicoMite V5.07.00: MMBasic on the RaspBerry Pi Pico

I'm pleased to announce that the PicoMite (MMBasic on the RaspBerry Pi Pico) is now released as version 5.07.00.
Many thanks are due to Geoff for MMBasic and the superb comprehensive manual and Mick for his work on PIO, proof reading and testing. Thanks also to all the TBS members who have tested the numerous alpha and beta versions to get us to this release.

The PicoMite is open source and is source is available on

This is the first version of MMBasic to be available open source (thanks Geoff) so we will be watching with interest (trepidation ?) what, if anything, the results of opening up the source will be.

Many, many thanks to Geoff and Peter, who's tenacity in the face of the dreaded 40-legged dog can't be questioned.

The open-source angle is going to be interesting.

It is a bit of a long story but in the early days I had some trouble with MMBasic being under the GNU open source licence.  But, open source does have its advantages, particularly with people's perception and fostering cooperation.  So, we thought that we will give it a go for the PicoMite (the Raspberry Pi world is very much into open source).

BTW, I have always maintained that the Maximite/Micromite licence is open source but it was not open enough for some people.

I hope that this does not digress this thread from Peter's excellent work.

It's a great move; I have tried to persuade others to get into MMBasic and the response has been "nah, it's not open source" (enough). They'll never touch the source, mind...they just like to say that stuff.

congrats to Geoff and Peter on an excellent job  

a small suggestion: either (A) the github repository should contain a copy of the code pre-compiled to a .uf2 file, or, (B) the README.md file should contain a clearly signposted link to geoff's website where the .uf2 file can be found.

i believe there is risk many folks who can not compile the source code themselves will end up visiting the github page, and face the problem of not knowing where to find the .uf2 file.

So much programming capability in a $4 microcontroller.
