Sorry keepis - i wasn't ignoring you - you somehow managed to sneak your reply in before mine without my seeing it when I posted.
It's 3am here now so I'm off to bed - I did try your links to programmers, but the Web browser under Ubuntu is too out of date - or the computer is too slow and times out. I'll try on the imac tomorrow and get one ordered.
hopefully I can get avrdudess to work on one computer... I'd hate to have to buy a newer one
