I didn't mean to suggest that it was the software.. So if the DS18B20 receives the data correctly, it should also set the resolution and timing correctly. But suppose 1 or more bits were received incorrectly by the DS18B20 (e.g. due to interference or because it's a "bad chip")? Then it could be that it takes the measurement with 11 or 12 bits of resolution and of course takes longer to do so. That would also explain why an additional delay seemed to help.
