Just an FYI:
I noticed that VFDs are insanely inexpensive on AE and so I grabbed a 2.2KW unit to play with. Hooked it up to an old Bridgeport knee-mill spindle-motor and I am totally impressed.
So many possibilities with these devices. They also have a flux-vector mode and so I think I'll grab another one and mount an incremental encoder on the motor-shaft to see how the PicoMite can perform at closed-loop position control. This was <£50 delivered.
