I did a design ages ago, the PicoMite Pear, which was virtually that. It gives the option to link the Picos in different ways so that you can experiment. The RP2040 Datasheet shows some examples of using a PIO as an extra COM or I2C port. They wouldn't be natively supported by MMBasic though.
