Frustrated- need help with learning

The artical from Geoff Graham seems to me that he assumes that you know how to run a program from start to finish. For me as a beginner, it is very frustrating as I dont know what to expect. Im needing someone to show me step by step to get the program up and running. I have read all the manuals, am I missing something? Help! Kevin.
