3v input problem....

I seem to recall reading somewhere that you should not apply 5v logic to 3v3 input pins - even with the 1k series resistor - without some kind of level-correction. It is quite likely I am just being over-cautious, but better that then..... Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!
