Great site I was looking around for a small diy wind generator to run some leds around my house for the kids at night, when I stumbled in here Now I want to build a fnp vawt and run some garden lighting and maybe a light pump as well(12v) I have gathered some stators and blown the dust off the old arc welder My first attempt was a dual stator exercise bike, unmoded stators wired in low zig zag config for single phase mains The stators have been filed but it has a huge start torque brake until I get the revs up(11 to 1 hub to pedal ratio). It will light several globes and I have plugged in a old neon sign transformer to generate a arc for the kids amusment I have to go back to it as I may have mucked up a winding polarity somewhere, huge resistance on start( loaded or not) I have just rewired a 42 pole to 7p1p with a 36 pole hub Beautiful Haven't wired up bridges yet but globe loading to star centre looks promising Cheers for everyone who contributed to this site I'm off to the shed |

Hi turnymf Glad you like the site. Sounds like you may have wired that dual stator wrong, the F&P's are a 3 phase machine and there isn't any way to connect all 3 phases together to make 1 phase. But you can take 1 phase from any two outputs, but this means your only using 1/3 of the available output. ZigZaging the connections wont work. Let us know how you go with the 7 phase conversion. Only a few people have made the 7 phase plunge, but those that have all report excellent results. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Glenn Well the 7 phase conversion went ok, looking around for outside bits My cro sprang to life the other day so here is what I'm getting with the pedal power and 2 unmod F&Ps wired zigzag, on the same shaft facing each other 350v p-p into a 75w globe cheers |

G'day turnymf, Welcome aboard. Good to hear your right into it already and have got the kids involved (peddling). I'm a bit of a self taught hack and haven't heard of the dual zig-zag arrangement and can't fathom what it might be. Is it possible to sketch the circuit and post it so I can stop scratching my head? ![]() A shot of the bike would be nice too? ![]() was working fine... til the smoke got out. Hi Gill, I'm only a hack that hasn't been taught yet Here is the bike, apart from the u bolts all from the tip. I chucked it together quickly to see if it would work. Not a great shot, and it's changed slightly, but you can get the idea It has the hubs wound out to make it a bit easier for my youngest, but they both wind in fully No good for my vawt as the turbine size would get out of hand ![]() I saw this posted by someone, somewhere. I believe it's off a 3 phase motor I have used the low zigzag config ![]() I'm all about the turbine at the moment, which is a bit of a cross between the magwind and a involute turbine Well... at the moment it is cheers |
