Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Alternative energy is something that I recently found to be very fascinating. I have watched most all of the videos on DYI solar and wind power on youtube.

I have a small machine shop in my garage with a smithy lathe/,milling machine. A few wood working tools too.

I have made a couple small steam engines and have more in the works.

This last week I went up on my roof and took the satellite dish off, brought it down and mounted it on a wooden stool. I then covered it with aluminum foil. Its not bad for a starting toy. It will cook a hot dog or make a bottle of tea.

My goal is to build a solar boiler or power a sterling engine to run a fan and push air through a solar space heater for home heating.Edited by tattoomike68 2008-04-14

Hi Mike

Welcome to the site.

Have a look at mylar, the silver reflective stuff thats sticky on one side. I remember seeing a video once of a young fella who covered a 10 foot dish with mylar and could ignite 2by4 lengths of timber.

Tracking the sun will be the biggest challenge.
