G'day there, just want to say hi. This is a great site with plenty of free info and pics about wind gennys from all over the globe. Have been interested in alternate energy for some time now . We will soon be a little greener with a 1kw solar array on the roof as well as solar hot water. Would also like to add a mill to further reduce out carbon foot print. I am interested in the AX FX mill as made by 'FILLM'(really nice work), but a little confused about the magnet/coil configuration. I always thought you would need to have the same ammount of magnets as coils.In his, 12 magnets ,9 coils. Ovbiously it works. Is this to reduce cogging and would you achieve better output with 12 magnets and coils? Can someone fill me in please..Marcus

Hi Marcus,

The AxFx design that fillm has made was based on a design that I proposed. I empirically determined the number of turns and the magnet separations on a test unit I made. Oztules set me on track with a starting point for the coil size and number of turns he used in his own design. The electrical configuration is pretty standard 3phase design. There is no cogging with an ironless core design. Much of the initial work was published on the forum. My own unit is still unfinished. I will be publishing pics before it flys. I had not intended to give detailed drawings. How good a unit performs has a lot to do with the skill of the builder. I only wanted to provide a concept, so others could work it into their own tower/blade/loading design.

Thanks gordon for the info,
Maybe Im biting off a bit more than I can chew. Sounds a bit hi tech and probably very time consuming(something i dont have right now) to fabricate one of these mills, so I might wait a little longer before indulging too deep. Think I might stick to a F&P mill instead. Seems to be plenty of info and plans on the site to aid me in construction. Would also like to procure info about grid connection and whats required. Can this be done without batteries and or capacitors? I will be interested in viewing your pics when you finish your project.Is it far from being completed ?.......regards Marcus

Hi Marcus

A F&P based windmill is a good starting project. Easy to build and cheap enough if your handy with a welder. You'll learn a lot too, and then you can take on a more powerfull design like Gordons axial flux alternator.

You can feed power back into the grid without batteries, but I'm no expert on this, so will let others answer. You should also have a chat to your local power supplier, they will have the info you need.

Hey Glenn

Well i have found 2 f and p's . think they are the 60 series as the wire size is small. Would it be an advantage if they are 80 or 100 series wound or can sufficient output be achieved with connection changes to the 60? Also had a talk to my grid interactive supplier who gave me a brochure on a windy boy inverter. not cheap....but then what is! 2 and a half grand plus instillation costs. ouch!! could buy a quantity of batteries and inverter to feed home lighting circuits for that price. I'll be posting some pics when i get started. Thanks for you help...marcus
