Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Howdy all,
My name is William signing on from Morgan Hill, CA. Looks like a lot of people are signing on from time zones far far away.
Hope all is well out there.
I am new to motors and electricity, however I am looking forward to learning and someday building some homegrown wind/solar of my own.
I've been compiling a list of resources and reading material to educate myself as much as possible. If you have any favorites that are online, pdf or book form I'm open to suggestions.
My schooling was in conceptual art (eg. nothing needed to be done "right", so long as it looked good), bronze sculpture. I like working with my hands and am reading some college level electrical engineering books to get a better understanding.
I currently rent with aspirations of having a few acres to grow and build on off the grid. I have switched all the lights to CFL in the house and am trying to be as conscious as possible about energy.
I'm looking forward to learning with you all and sharing my adventures.
Have a great day!

Mr. Diode would probably be inappropriate due to the fact I am just in discovery mode about electronics. But I like the symbol. Arrows pointing forward.
I need to educate my mind before I get in over my head and waste time and energy or God forbid hurt someone or myself.
I've currently pulled two motors, one from a Kirkland washing machine made by whirlpool and one from a treadmill. So far the treadmill is perm mag DC, but the RPM's are too high to be anything useful for wind:

The washer machine one I'm not sure what kind of motor it is and if I could use it for anything appropriate: http://thegyre.org/imgs/motors/w_motor_specs.JPG
Still reading http://www.allaboutcircuits.com it's a goodie.
