I am looking at getting a grid connected solar system installed on my home. For the inverter I am tossing up between a Fronius and SMA, but it might come down to what an installer might be able to do a better deal on. For someone who is keen on DIY interfacing to monitor power generation is there a logical choice between these two inverters?

Fronius is the best inverter for long term use because it is easy and quick to repair and it will be supported in 15-20 years time.

it has the widest working voltage range and it does the 30% overpanel thing standing on its head.

I wouldn't interface with the inverter the OEM stuff is expensive and restrictive. The modbus protocol is open and standardised so it can be tapped into with aftermarket stuff or a clamp meter setup can be used between the inverter and the grid.
I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

Many thanks yahoo2 for your vote for Fronius. At this stage I’m concluding that there is not a big difference between the two brands for my purposes, judging by the absence of passion on this topic.
