Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Good news for anyone who has been struggling with the previous lack of range from the SMA bluetooth equipped inverters (Sunnyboy) - They have finally released a piggyback module with an external antenna which overcomes the previous problem of very restricted bluetooth range due to having it in a totally enclosed metal case.
The new module is called the Bluetooth Piggy-Back Plus and is a plugin replacement for the previous Bluetooth Piggy-Back. It is supplied complete with co-ax cable and a dinky little 'rubber duck' antenna which mounts on the outside of the inverter case through one of the spare plugged-off openings.
I have just had mine changed and the range has gone from a couple of metres to covering all of the house and yard outside as well. I can now not only have the Sunny Beam display unit anywhere in the house but can also get a reliable connection to the Sunny Explorer software running on my computer at the other end of the house via a Bluetooth dongle.
The even better news is that the new unit was supplied on exchange free of charge following an email to SMA Australia complaining of the previous lack of range. The only hitch is that you have to get it installed which, while only a simple job, involves solar tech/electrician.
