Interesting...I guess the transmission losses are not serious so it works ok.

It begs the idea, of putting the (large) batteries on the trains themselves for some instances. It wouldn't need overhead wires etc, a lithium battery would be light,  replacing diesel costs would pay off the battery well, and batteries as railcars could be swapped, charged etc easily.
