If you can work out how to de-cog it.

These bikes are most likely controlled by gyro's and accellerometers, and work from body weight distribution whether to accelerate, or brake, Segway principles probably. Could catch on big time.

Must require forward momentum to stay upright, like a bicycle, without the need for the additional wheel.

I dont think there was any segway involved as he said the first models were pedal powered and went electric to save on space for folding it up more compact.
Braking was done through the motor.

I cant wait till my birthday when Mac will send me one

No worries, mate. Just send me the winning Lotto numbers and I'll send you two Yike Bikes! Easy, eh?

I can't help but think what would be passing through my mind, if I were on one of these things approaching a large chuck hole in heavy traffic. Crashing would be a given, but I'm concerned that my thoughts would be more on my wallet at $4K+ than on the impending doom of my body parts.

They're cool bikes, but at the cost of a small car, even if I were swimming in cash, I'd have to think twice before plunking down all that dough in exchange for a pair of badly skinned elbows and knees!

For now, I'll be happy to merely watch from the curb. When the price comes down to something approaching reasonable, I'll maybe think of hopping on one.

Edit: I was looking at the Yike Bike Web site and thought I should tell everyone the weight limit (for the rider) is about 220 pounds. That lets me out until I shed about 70 pounds (which I'm working on, by the way)! At 6' 6" it ain't easy being me.

Holy moly Mac, you're about twice as weighty as I am, and I'm only 6'1".
I do hope your extra weight is in the top 5" .

Have you tried walking? Its free and did wonders to me, about 5km every day, just over one hour's effort.

See you there, mate!

[Quote=Tinker]I do hope your extra weight is in the top 5".

If it were up to me, I'd rather it be mid-body in another part that's about 5" if you catch my drift. If I'd known how hard it would be to lose weight, I'd have backed away from those thousands of chocolate bars I consumed over the last 50 years.

About 4 weeks ago I was looking at the man in the mirror and decided it was time for him to do something about his size. So, I joined a gym and forked over the dough for a personal trainer. So far, I've reduced my resting heart rate 13 bmp and I've lost 8 pounds. I work out at the gym 6 days a week at around 5:30 a.m. and hope to be back to what I consider my ideal weigh (220 or thereabouts) in a year.

Back in the Carter administration (USA) there was a slogan "WIN" which stood for Whip Inflation Now. It was readily pointed out by that same administration that WIN upside down was "NIM" which stood for "No Instant Miracles" -- a more realistic view to be sure.

I'm of the later thinking; no instant miracles. I'll be happy to shed the 80 extra pounds over the course of a year. If it happens sooner, great, but I'm setting my goals out a bit more.

I started at 300 pounds. I know what you're thinking, so go ahead and say it. Mac's a light bulb with arms and legs. Edited by MacGyver 2010-03-05

Pete

Eat chocolate; it worked for me.

Actually, my personal trainer (a 21-year-old kid with washboard abs and muscles everywhere) told me it's a simple formula dealing with calories in vs calories out. In my case, it was a one-way street; just calories in. My idea of exercise was reaching for another glass of milk or lifting the lid on the cookie jar. Really!

My trainer told me he's sure there's a "six-pack" hiding somewhere between my chin and my waist. I told him I replaced it years ago with a full keg!

I'll keep you in the loop. I have about 72 more pounds to lose. I'd ship them to you post-paid if there were a way.

Somehow we have to steer this thread back to the Yike Bike. Then again, it is in "Other Stuff" so maybe it's okay.

Chocolate only makes my dentist fat in the pockets and not me.

Yes we have strayed a little off topic but im sure others get a smile out of some light banter and it is educational.
The topic police on this forum is very good compared to some forums and is why many of us are here.
Its a work group that is fun to be part of i think, Bit like a few boys out the back shed having a beer working on a few projects....sooner or later the bull$#&* will come out.

Now what was this topic about again....middle aged men riding bikes wasnt it??

Land yachts are pretty old. My father made one, and I rode it when I was about 8yold. Kite buggies have also had their day. Ice racing is not for the faint of heart. Super fast >60mph??.

BTW I was 8 a long time ago.
