As promised, here's the latest chapter in big Mac's quest for a healthy lifestyle.

Had my cholesterol checked today; 153 overall with LDLs coming in at 104 and HDLs a little on the low side at 37. All in all, it's likely a heart attack will be the last thing that get this kid!

My trainer says the only way to get the HDLs up to around 40 (just 3 more notches up) is by doing more aerobic exercise. He could have talked all day and not said that; I hate running!

The goal is to lose 100 pounds and be fit. I'm a little over half way there with 41 pounds to go. The overall BMI has slid from 32.4 to 27.

I was going to make a tee shirt that said OAF on the back, which was to stand for "Old And Fat". Nowadays, I'd have to change that to "Old And Fit". I hope to reach 225 pounds by the end of summer.

Now, if only I could get my ax-fx built and running!

Good to hear your success maybe a bit more lawn mowing will help and a lot of work on the mill as well, also I eat a clove of raw garlic every morning with breakfast and that is a big help, also keeps vampires away and most visitors at a respectable distance.

At this rate we will be calling you junior Mac and not big Mac.
Good to hear you are still heading on the right path.

Myself is just the opersite...im a skinny f%$k and have been all my life and only wish i could put a pound or two on.
But thats life and i hate running to, so might be best to be on the slim side.

Mac, you forgot to add the words 'lots of'
Actually, a small amount of chocolate is good for you. I have one small square of high cacao chocolate every day .

From what you said 'lots of' must have been 1/2 pound of it every day for you .

In the USA we have a little grocery store called Trader Joe's. They carry only the highest-quality stuff and have items nobody else carries. One such item is a huge milk chocolate candy bar with or without almonds called a "Pound Plus".

Not to brag; more along the lines of 'shame', I've been known to down the whole thing at one sitting. Of course, I washed it down with two or three Cokes (9 tsp. sugar each!).

So, you're right. I should have further qualified my post by adding 'lots of' like you suggest. I merely thought everybody my size would somehow automatically "know" 'lots of' was a given!

Since I started this 'health' kick, I've changed my diet drastically. I tell people I have a 'silverfish" diet; mostly paper! Actually, I eat everything except animal products and anything with oil or fat (including nuts and avocados). When you think about that, you'll soon realize only fresh fruits, vegetables and water is left!

Still, nobody will argue that a blood Trigliceride level of 62 ain't nothin' to sneeze at! "Normal" is anything under 130, so 62 is less than half that. I credit my diet mostly.

I thought the little grocery stores in the States were all called "Moe's"
Well at least that is what the educational program The Simpsons showed.

Its better being a silverfish than a moth, because have you seen the size of moth balls?

5-5-2010 Update

Down to 263 pounds (from 325) Remember, I'm 6'6" tall!
BMI down from 32 to 27 shooting for goal of 20 (wish me luck!)
Within 21 pounds of gym's projected "goal weight" of 242 (although "I'd" like to weigh 225)
Cholesterol 153 with LDL @ 104, triglicerides @ 62 and HDL @ 37 (see above post)
Blood Pressure Normal
Resting Pulse Rate 60 to 65 down from 85
Sleep Apnea gone
Asthma Attacks gone
I've lost 19.3 inches overall, but my body fat still rivals Shamu's! Ugh! Upside to that is Shamu is in great shape!

More as it happens. Oh, the ax-fx genny? Hmmmm . . . . . I'm working on it too!

I've been putting on a few kg's the last few months, need to do something about it soon. I go for a walk with the dog every day but that doesn't get the heart rate up enough.

Good to hear the caterpillar diet is working with your nuts and berries.
Just as long as you dont join some nutters and berries group that dress in bed sheets and enjoy free love.

It must be all that mower pushing you have been doing raising the heart rate.

I bit the bullet and forked over the cash for an electric mower. The push mower couldn't keep up with all the new growth caused by unseasonably high rainfall lately. In a week's time, my yard began looking like a hay farm.

I still have to push the dumb thing, but at least it does all the cutting. I was going to buy the battery operated one (cordless) but it was too much like buying a new car, so I settled for the corded model.

Can't wait until I officially retire; hitching up the travel trailer and parking on someone else's lawn!

Electric lawn mowers work Great, Just keep the blade(s) sharp.

The weight thing is a challange. It is so easy to get off tract. And all them dam food ads don't help.

I was a narcotics investigator in the Coast Guard back in the day. You'd be amazed at how much pot never made it to the property room!

Hi Mac,

After worrying about my excessive Body Mass Index for some time, I came to the conclusion that its not that I am overweight, just undertall. Accordingly, I have now decided to focus my efforts on growing taller.

A particular benefit of this approach is that my BMI is reduced by the square of any height that I gain, which makes it a double bonus.

FYI -- Even though I have a "cheat" day once a week, I find the less I eat meat and cheese, the less I crave the stuff.

So -- No, I'm not tempted, but on the other hand, I usually have a fish 'sandwich' (without the bun and without the tartar sauce) at McDonald's every Friday. They are on special on Fridays (likely a move to attract the Catholic crew, eh?) and are $1.39 instead of nearly $4 like they are the rest of the week. I also usually get one of their $1 little burgers and a strawberry shake. LIke I said, it's a "cheat" day once a week.

In my country (USA) we have a nursery rhyme that goes like this: "Jack Sprat could eat no fat; his wife could eat no lean." The rhyme is usually depicted with a characterization of a man skinny as a rail and a woman rivaling Shamu's physique. Bottom line here is: Eating fat makes you fat.

My "diet" is 99% plant based. I avoid all oils and as a result have lost lots of pounds and pretty fast (63 pounds down since January this year). No oil consumption also lowers cholesterol to the point where the only cholesterol in your body is what your own liver makes. It turns saturated fat into cholesterol, which is something you actually 'need' to be healthy. When you consume more saturated fat and/or cholesterol than your own body makes for you, that's when problems (clogged arteries, etc.) start.

Oh, the good oils, you say? Oil is oil, so even oils from nuts and avocados are something to consider. I avoid eating nuts and avocados like the plague.

And for those folks worried that MacGyver isn't getting enough protein: eating one grain and one legume daily provides 100% "perfect" protein without consuming any animal-sourced food. I eat raw oats and beans on a daily basis. By the way, if you eat the enzyme "cellulase" with your beans, you won't fart like a horse! Cellulase is the only "pill" I ever take, by the way.
