Added a new page to explain the difference between watts and watt hours. I think I've explained it OK, let me know if it doesn't make any sense.

I think that clears up a lot, it is difficult sometimes for people to realize the a 1000 watt toaster only uses 33.33 watts to make two slices of toast, time 2 minuets.
Whereas a 2.5k watt booster in a hot water system does in fact use the 2500 watts to boost for one hour or 1250 watts of energy to boost for a half hour. Actual energy consumed.

As you say it is the time in relation to the rated load or actual output that gives the total energy used or produced not not the rating itself.
