Looks like we will get diesel-electric / gas turbine frigates. Hunter s Now estimated at $9 billion per ship. That's about the same as a US nuclear aircraft carrier.. and for that we get a frigate. |

Begs the question, why spend all that money on a single ship, when in a war scenario a single anti-ship missile will sink it. Absolutely pointless purchase, the days of WW2 era thinking are over, look at all those hundred billion dollar US aircraft carriers and support frigates, they high tailed it out of the gulf soon as the first missiles were aimed at them. Spend the money on other things that modern society actually needs, like a better health system. |

The $9billion is the fuel bill for the first fill of diesel and you get the frigate for free. |

It looks like the propulsion is either diesel or gas turbine, instead of the original designs ability to use both combined for speed. Extra fuel storage is fitted. The gas turbine is a RR Aviation Trent, marine version. Gas turbines do drink a lot. The estimate I saw suggests Trents at cruise output have a fuel burn of 4000 - 5000 litres/hour. (Assuming it doesn't pop a turbine of course )Edited 2026-04-22 18:00 by zeitfest |
