Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.
Why are AC motors so ridiculously expensive ?? They don't look particularly complicated, seems to me that a tribe of halfway switched on folk could build the things at a mere fraction of whats being asked for them at present.

BYLONG QUOTED ME JUST OVER 5 K FOR A CURTIS WITH CONTROLLER
FOR A HOLDEN COMBO VAN
I AM NOT SURE IF IT WAS A 9 INCH
Whats wrong with 415 volt 3 phase industrial motors ?? There must be zillions of those available & given the number made, they should be available cheap ?? I believe a few conversions have been done using these motors so it appears its not impossible.
AC-50 AC Motor 8.5"x15" 7/8" shaft
Curtis 1238 controller
Curtis 840 LCD Gauge
Wiring loom
Price: $6325.00
Certainly a lot more attractive than what I've been quoted elsewhere, however I'm still leaning toward a Prius conversion based on the following numbers which I believe are correct. A base car (depending on age) is worth $10 - 15000, plug-in conversion & extra batteries another $15000, means total cost is $20 - 25000 for something thats got all the bells and whistles, can supposedly go 200k in EV mode & has its own range extender. I plan on checking out 'The Roadie' http://www.road-e.com.au/ which is an interesting if aircraft inspired thing built in Ballina. Mind you at $30,000 it strikes me as overpriced for whats little more than a three-wheeled motorbike.
