I had a great aunt named Manona who lived in Boothbay Harbor on the coast of Maine. She acquired a very old parrot called Pete which had previously belonged to a sea captain in sailing ships. She would host meetings of the local chapter of the "Daughters of the American Revolution" in her house. For the edification of youse guys in Oz, the DAR is an extremely conservative, blue blood, blue nosed club of uptight women who can trace their ancestors back two centuries in the U.S. They insist that proper protocol be orserved in their presence at all times. Pete had an extensive, picturesque, ribald, and billious vocabulary he learned at sea. He would make extensive comments during the DAR meetings. The old girls would begin blushing after awhile. Eventually, Aunt Manona would get up and cover Pete's cage and he would quiet down, but she would deliberately delay covering the cage until the old girls had developed some color in their cheeks. Friend of mine had a Major Michell parrot- who had both the telephone and the front door bell down pat... They had a t200 telstra phone, which you could change the volume- and the pitch- of the ring, so every day was a phone battle- they would change the ring tone, so they knew a phone call was coming in- that worked once or twice, then the parrot would start 'singing' the new phone ring at random times.... so they would change the pitch and that worked a few times... It became the norm that if you rang and it rang out- you just kept ringing over and over until they finally realised it was the phone and not the bloomin parrot.... It also had to have an actual padlock on its cage door- pegs, spring clips, twist ties- none would hold it for long-they would come home and the parrot would meet them at the door PMSL at the parrot clip btw |

Yeah, man, I know what you mean! We used to have a Cockatiel and it would LOVE to mimic the(then) 80's telephone ringer, and it could do it really well. This Cockatiel could not mimic words, but it did love noises. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

You've got it right Grogs, Aunt Manona was a real character. Another uncle had a Mina bird which are much better mimics. That thing used to drive his dogs nuts by barking, meowing, hissing and spitting at them. |
