Just my opinion, and apologies if I appear to overstep, but I feel you are reading too much into the responses you get. Where you saw an "ungraceful and slightly haughty" response, I saw "brief". I've also gotten brief responses--if they provide the answer to my question, I'm satisfied; if they don't, I can ask again. In general, I find this to be a very helpful forum. you are partly right, but I can not help thinking that there is a difference in treatment between most of you and me (maybe because I'm French) for example this topic https://www.thebackshed.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11152&PN=3 who did not interest anyone, or other topic that I had done to explain my wishes and where we can easily see the difference of tone in the TassiJim and Geoffg answers, the first is polite and explicit, the second is haughty and in bad faith. |

i believe what you are experiencing is the language barrier, where something quite innocent in one language translates to something completely different in another. this has, over the years, led to some quite hurtful exchanges over on the hp calculator forums at http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/ please, please let it go, and accept that no one on here wishes anyone else any ill will. cheers, rob :-) |

Peter, Geoff, Rob and TassyJim provide their work for free. I and, I expect ALL of the members of this forum are VERY grateful for that. Most people do not respond to unwarranted criticism and sarcasm well. Maybe it is not their attitude that you should be concerned with but the problem may be closer to home. Bill Keep safe. Live long and prosper. |

Bill indeed I must do twice as much effort as you to participate on this forum, first understand your methods of work, and then dialogue in English. Too bad you did not understand that. please, please let it go, and accept that no one on here wishes anyone else any ill will. thank you for confirming what I thought for a few time to know that this forum is open to all except dogs and french and as we say in French "c'est toujours le plus intelligent qui cède" (it is always the most intelligent who go out) so I will leave you between you and good continuation. |

...(maybe because I'm French) Stop that! This forum is a (free membership) international community, for you to suggest national/racial discrimination as a motive for a lack of interest or perceived sleight is outrageous. You are not the only person to have made zero-interest posts. This is not farcebook, you don't post here to get an endorphin hit when others "like" your post. You post interesting stuff and ask questions - if you get no response, it is not because the world hates you. Stop looking to be a victim. For me, this place is a refuge from the constant barrage of day-to-day nonsense - I come here and meet with great minds and the demonstrations of borderline genius show the crap of past histories and governmental differences don't mean a thing. Let's play football in the mud and make the guns fall silent, but take off your dirty boots at the door. We are all the same and are here because of it. |

Please can we now terminate this "discussion". I've written to goc30 privately to try and clear the air so no more posts please. |

Awwww, come on, I like these little kerfuffles. They prove that we're from different cultures, speak different languages, and think differently, but we all like playing with either code or breadboarded gadgets. What's wrong with kerfuffles anyway??????? Paul in NY |

Hopefully this will be the final post in this thread. I must admit to feeling uneasy at the very start of this conversation. I guess what it all comes down to is that we are a diverse lot; different cultures, & the wide open window of mis-interpretation. goc30 - I am sorry you feel as you do - I personally could not understand your feeling of "discrimination" from reading any of the preceding posts. Others have very succinctly dealt with the possible reasons - I can only reinforce that you have mis-interpreted some of the responses. Please understand as previously stated that this forum has never, & does not, discriminate against anyone. My 2c worth... All the best Brian P. |

the feeling of discrimination comes mainly from confusion over different opinions about the operation of manuals as well as comments that are a little bit too "harsh" from part of someones. I had an email from Peter. it is enough for me to consider the incident as a clot. you can close this thread |

NO! NO! NO! NO! PLEASE DON'T DO THAT! If MMBasic is going to continue to increase in power and capability it has to have active ports to ever more powerful processors as they come along. The MMX implementation is great. The Armite H7 is even greater! Kerfuffles are one thing ... humor is another ... but thwarting the development of a language as useful as MMBasic is another thing entirely. Kerfuffles go away by themselves. In the polyglot neighborhoods of New York where I grew up they are an everyday occurrance but tomorrow they are gone. In my third of a century working for Pan Am I learned that in the monolithic cultures of Europe kerfuffles raise persistent hackles. In my youth in polyglot New York I learned that newly immigrated people from Europe did not react well to kerfuffles. This forum is more polyglot than any New York neighborhood ever could be. We must continue to work on developing MMBasic to its full potential while advancing the acceptance and understanding of differing opinions and differing cultural reactions. NO! NO! NO! NO! PLEASE DON'T DO THAT! Paul in NY |

Whatever happens I hope this doesn't put matherp (or anyone else) off. I'm aware it's much easier to complain than to do the actual work and also quite easy to misunderstand a poster's style. Such misunderstandings can lead to undesired outcomes, sadly. A lot of software would benefit from better/more/different documentation - but often there is no-one with the time or perhaps skill to do it. When only one or two people are writing the software, and when it's been written recently, it's asking a lot to expect thorough documentation in a style that suits everyone (which is an unrealistic idea, too, as people vary so much). Also, expectations seem to have changed from when I started out. Then, you were expected to spend your own time figuring things out and of course there was no option to ask the authors (whether of the documentation or of the software). Most of the time you had no source code either, whereas now you can potentially get it and read it. When I could get source code I have often learned things. (Famously, why "you are not expected to understand this" was actually a very sensible comment - IMO wrongly criticised.) John |

I agree to take care of the maintenance of the documentation, insofar as it is a matter of synthesizing the information and the chapters and to build a specific and exhaustive documentation for each version of micromite (excluding maxima). included with simple examples and under the control of the developers. I can do articles but it will take someone to correct my english. |

@goc30 I like your offer. As we all know, correcting someone else's work is much easier than creating it in the first place - if you can do the creating then I am sure that many others will offer to "tidy up" - if indeed that's necessary (your English is not that bad (much better than my "what little we learnt at school" French ). What others have posted regarding the priorities of software creators is true - the energies of the writer are focused on the creation process - making it work. Once the job is "finished" (if ever) the writer is so burnt out & documentation is way down in the list. Returning to the documentation of your project after a time is quite difficult - what was up front in your mind as you were writing has largely evaporated & been replaced by other projects (I know I'm airing MY shortcomings here ). Documenting "as you write" is a worthwhile scenario - & it helps clarify in your mind what you are about.Anyway, more than enough of my rant - let's all move on & continue the "team effort" which is very much the major strength of this forum. Best Regards Brian P. |

@goc30: My English is very bad! Believe me, without a translation machine I would be lost! You should try: https://www.deepl.com/translator ...without this page I would be lost... (Cette machine traduit également le texte en français! - Although unfortunately I can't speak French... )...often it is helpful to have the text translated back again... Frank |

My English is very bad! Believe me, without a translation machine I would be lost! You should try: https://www.deepl.com/translator Frank j'utilise parfois le traducteur gogole, mais il faut souvent corriger quand c'est trop technique, et comme j'aime bien apprendre les langues... I sometimes use the translator google, but it is often necessary to correct when it is too technical, and as I like to learn languages ... |
