Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Is the USB dedicated to console only?

I have a FTDI USB-RS422 cable and was wondering if I could use the USB port.

I do need a console and would prefer to use the serial option.

The USB is dedicated to the console on the E100, E64 and E28. Peter's MMX and ArmMite series I think can support SOME USB things like keyboard and mouse.

On the E100 specifically, depending on which board version you have, you can use either a native serial console on CON6 with the likes of a CP2102 USB-Serial module, or the on-board USB connection via the 1455 USB interface chip on the 1D version of the board. The 1455 also allows you to upgrade the firmware in the PIC32 WITHOUT using a PicKit-3 or the Microchip IPE software, so it is good like that.

1B PCB's don't have the optional 1455, they use the native PIC32 USB connection, which was sometimes a bit of a PITA. Version 1C has an SOIC 1455 fitted, and version 1D has an optional DIL 1455 chip for the USB interface.

Sounds good.

I have a Click RS232 and a RS232-485/422 converter that I will use for now. I'll use my two E-100s for development and grab a nice new 1d version for production

Not up to date on this 1455 stuff but I believe that I have a 28pin module that has it.

Many thanks.

Yes, the E28 module has the 1455 USB chip fitted by default.

The beauty of this chip, is that it acts as both a serial-USB bridge, and also as an ICSP for uploading new firmware HEX files to the PIC32 chip, all using a free utility, and the existing USB cable. No huge Microchip IDE download to get the IPE to program the chip, no need for a PicKit-3 programmer either.

I include this chip by default now on ALL new Micromite boards.

The 1D version of the kit DOES NOT come with the 1455, although, it is provided for on the PCB. You will need to add a 1455 DIL chip to your order if you want that feature set on the 1D PCB. Some people do not, you see, as they are happy to use the CP2102 modules they already have, on CON6.

That's why the 1455 DIL is optional on the 1D's and not automatically included.
