Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

The post Roll your own data logger - CMM2 made me wonder if there's a cable+board (I guess both) to provide a convenient way to bring the signals out / take them in and connect things, and which is protected against "abuse" (cross-connection, shorts, etc)?

I suppose it would be good if it also had some LEDs and, er, switches, etc, which can be patched in?

I suspect opto-isolators etc would be useful.

The ribbon / breadboard is just a Raspberry PI breakout with a notch cut in it so I can reverse the cable...

Not quite as grand as you suggestion - but cheap as chips.

A fine idea - not sure I'm up to the challenge to build it though.
