On a whim, I loaded v5.05.06RC22 and suddenly all my errors went away. I can change the OPTIONS at will and they stay the way I set them with no weirdness, no lockups, no rebooting. I think I'll stick with that version for a while. I still wonder what difference or differences between RC22 and the betas cause my system to have fits. Thanks to all who tried to help me!
