Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Bit of a rant this one, but WHY the hell does not MS TELL YOU what program or app still has handles open on a USB device when you try to eject it?

This is the common message you get when you try to eject a USB storage device:

...I'm sure we've ALL seen this at some point.

The thing that "Annoys me" the most about this message, is that Windoze KNOWS that a handle is still open to this device, so why the hell does MS not TELL YOU the app name or process that still lays claim to the device, so you can shut down that app or process, and then safely remove?

More often then not, after shutting off anything you think might still have access to the USB device, and try yet again to eject it, you just get the same message again and again and again and again.

Most people are like me at that point I think, and just say "F it!" and pull the damn USB cord out anyway.

This USB message has been irritating me for YEARS, and it is a wonder that MS have not yet made that message specify WHAT app or process still has grips on the device.

Perhaps I am missing something here, but.....damn, Microsoft.....when are you gonna actually tell people WHAT the F is still holding on to this device, so you can end the process if you have to, and then complete the safely remove process?

Because it's windows and you are a mere user. You shouldn't be asking such things - they are for your IT department to deal with. ;)

On Linux you could have a go with such as lsof (list open files).

Is it available for Windoze (I suppose via a Linux subsystem)?

If not, a web search suggests openfiles may be suitable, though the doc don't sound too promising.

Yeah happens all the time, hidden processes, look under task manager, I tell the PC to restart, my pc is really quick, back going again in less than 20 seconds, so no big deal really. But is a bloody nuisance.
