Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

PeteCotton said  Tom, maybe you should take a mental break from MMB4L, and write your Star Trek game? I think it would be awesome!

Thanks Pete, but I've got to get this bl**dy thing released soon or I don't think I will ever release it. With regards "my" Star Trek game, I'm not sure that will ever happen which is why I shared the sprites in case someone else might make use of them. Incidentally they were designed for version 2; version 1 was programmed and finished in AMOS (Basic) on the Amiga 500 but alas like everything else I wrote before university it is long gone ... not even sure what happened to my Spectrum, BBC and Amiga efforts ... or even recall getting rid of the machines (but they are not in my parents attic).

Sorry to say but I am "still that guy", look closely at the sprite it is a Galaxy class with 3 warp nacelles, i.e. the Enterprise D from "All Good Things" which I'm reasonably confident de-cloaks to fire on the Klingons .

Nice try though,

Tom

AMOS was absolutely brilliant. I wrote a tonne of stuff with that back in the day.

I've been giving a lot of thought about my mental health recently, and part of this project is just mucking about with the CMM2 (other maximites are also available), with no pressure, timeline or expectations. I have found that I am actually way more productive, as the tinkering aspect has become joyful.

I get that you are putting yourself under pressure to get MMB4L released, and I respect your dedication, but maybe once that is done, kick back and take a programming vacation. And by that I don't mean a vacation from programming, I mean programming for fun.

I know I'm not the first to look at it this way, but it is somewhat of a revelation to me how pleasant this change in gears has been. I'm wandering between projects - I have a kick arse ninja game that I love the look of, I'm tinkering with a racing game (similar to Outrun), Heliblast 2 is kicking around somewhere on my SD card, and the scope creep on this (not) Star Trek game is hilarious. I doubt I'll ever get any of them finished - but that's fine - no deadlines, no pressure.

It also occurs to me that one of the lovely things about developing for retro systems, is that you don't have to worry about the constant march of technology making your game obsolete before it is finished. My stuff is written for the CMM2, and will always run on the CMM2.

It will probably be a vacation from programming (aside from bug-fixes) as my daughter wants me to run D&D for her (and younger sister) on a more regular basis and that will require me to re-read the rules and dust off my GM-ing skills.

Edit: If anyone is curious why it's taking me so long (and why when it arrives it will still only support a subset of what MMBasic for Windows does) its because out of the gate I want to support 3 architectures (x86_64, armv6l & aarch64) and am testing it against 12 non-trivial programs. Also, I'm not retired like some people

Best wishes,

Tom

Brilliant. I raised my kids on AD&D and they loved it. But they moved on to 5E in college. I bought a tonne of PDF's and print on demand books from DriveThruRPG. Even if I'm never going to use them for a game, they still hold a huge nostalgia hit for me.
