This was handy and potentially dodgy. Win 11 updated and asked me to change password and verify it but next tine I logged in I couldn't remember it. I used rufus to load hiren boot cd to usb stick as bootable and changed bios to boot from usb stick and when it did used the utilities-security-passwords and the top of 3 listed to remove the password to start win 11, it just starts no password. ok, pc not secure with no password but this shows it never was. Cheaper than taking it to a shop where I was told they may have to reinstall win 11.. I didn't ask how much. hiren has loads of repair utilities. https://www.hirensbootcd.org |

Actually almost easier than getting into Win10 with the mod (?) that changes the assisted input selection to open the command line box instead. It's been ages since I've used Hiren, glad to see that it's still out there. And be sure to avoid Balena Etcher, it's been caught doing bad things. ;> |

What sort of bad things? I used it most recently to make a bootable usb for Ubuntu 24.4 LTS. What should be used instead? ~ Edited 2025-04-20 10:38 by lizby PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed |

They have been caught spying. But Balena says that it's not them but imposters. Who knows? https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/2977 |

I couldn't get the latest version of Etcher to work (downloaded from their site). I was trying to make a MX Linux disk from an ISO file but I couldn't figure out how to do it - the interface has changed so help info on the web was useless. Rufus saved the day. Last time I needed to get rid of a Windows password I did it from a USB boot of Puppy Linux, which ignores all Windows "protection" junk of course. . Rufus has always worked for me. :) I'm full-time Linux these days, so bootable USB creation is built-in. |

A usb drive created with Rufus on win has a Linux partition. win 11 can't format it after it's created, need 3rd party free software. |

If I'm making bootable USB sticks they are always for Linux, so that's no problem for me. :) Linux can reformat them and/or delete the partitions no problem. I wouldn't trust Windows to operate on a Linux stick even if it could! Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

In W10/W11, you can disable that bloody annoying(for me, anyway) "Default setting" where passwords expire and you have to enter new ones - usually every three months or so. I CAN see the security feature use of this, but for ME, it is just a pain in the posterior, so I disable that "Feature" and stick with one password that never expires. Disable password expiration...
