Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Repeated advise: No I2C for remote sensors. Especially not in an industrial environment..... Unless you earn your money from providing repair service and debugging.

I thought that when I saw it. I2C was never designed to leave the PCB. Everything you can get out of it after 0.5m is a bonus. :)

Yes, you can use this to convert to CAT5 for longer distances, but CAT5/6 wasn't designed for industrial noise environments either. You can make it do it, but it's certainly not ideal.

There's a reason why RS485 and CAN were developed. Even when you look at the additional complexity of having to put a micro between the driver and the sensor it's almost insignificant nowadays.

Yeah, not for me but I saw some recent I2C discussions and so just FYI.

@Mixtel90, I hear ya   but the brainwashing overlords are pushing EtherCAT like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Considering the EMR from this high-power PWM, who the heck wants to be throwing 100Mbs around - and those connectors? No!

RS485 and CAN all the way

Connectors don't come any more robust than those used by DMX (RS485) and so I think I'll go with the 5-pin types for full duplex.
Ready-made cables of all lengths are available OTS.

XLR connectors are the dog's xxxx. Millions of them are thrown, walked on and used to drag things across the floor every day. :)

I have an old Nascom-2 in a 19" frame that uses XLR for the mains input lead. Remember, this is from the very early years of the IEC standard, before it was available in most places.
