Hi folks, In the presumed absence of anyone selling Pico Computer 3 in the UK, what is the absolutely minimal setup to get an HDMI compatible PicoMite? I need just enough so I can test my adventure game for compatibility, don't need sound or USB at this time. Thanks, Tom Edited 2026-08-16 03:43 by thwill MMBasic for Linux, Game*Mite, CMM2 Welcome Tape, Creaky old text adventures |

Using that board will be hdmi compatible but NOT PC3 compatible as the pinout is different |

pinout for what ? All I want is enough to test the graphics of my murder mystery will work on PicoMiteHDMI devices - MMB4L's simulation is incomplete, and in any case I've nothing to compare the behaviour with. Perhaps I will get a PC3 (or 4?) at some point, but I don't need one enough that I'm prepared to go through the large upfront cost of a multiple JLCPCB order. Well D'uh! Born, bred and will die as a European - I've got more in common with the lot of you than the majority of the nutters across the pond. Yes, I know, no politics, but ... I'll say nothing more. Tom MMBasic for Linux, Game*Mite, CMM2 Welcome Tape, Creaky old text adventures |

I think you'll need OPTION HDMI PINS 2, 0, 6, 4 to get that sock to work in MMBasic. That's not the setup for the PC3. Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

That's because 2,0,6,4 is the default setting (I just checked). PC3 uses 1,3,5,7. . Edited 2026-08-16 23:46 by Mixtel90 Mick Zilog Inside! nascom.info for Nascom & Gemini Preliminary MMBasic docs & my PCB designs |

From earlier days I found a pico plus 2. In Those days there was a problem with cpu speeds ecxeeding 200Mhz and PSRAM. Maybe 60300 works on it, combined with dvi sock. Psram is at gp47. Then it is hardware wise close to picomputer3. (Have to fix sound and sdcard and hub (plenty of normal hubs) and RTC)….. Volhout Edited 2026-08-17 15:46 by Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

Hello Volhout, @Doktorn just reported, that the Waveshare Core2350B runs as PC3 clone. I found it here for 16€ |

I considered modifying my design to use that but, by the time the "early bird" special offers have finished I don't think there will be a huge difference in price, especially if you are ordering the DVI and RM2 modules at the same time to split the shipping cost. I checked JLCPCB at the weekend and five Pico 3's were going to be about £33 each (inc shipping) but they only had enough PSRAM for two of them... So I looked at Waveshare this morning and I can get two Waveshare RP2350B 8Mb 'Cores' for £18.27 (£9.14 each) including 30 day shipping. Amazon UK has them at £13.43 each (£11.51 without the USB connector) exc. postage. I already have a Pico2350 'DIL' (with PSRAM) which is currently running 6.02 with an Adafruit DVI Breakout Board. This is working well with my HDMI display and I'm planning to add (it's breadboarded using Vero-wire) an SD card but this has been somewhat sidelined whilst other things get done e.g. building & installing a TouchDRO 'kit' (& scales) for my new Seig mill. I'd quite like a Waveshare 'Core' PCB (gerbers) design where I can add modules if (& when) I need them. I might build two (minimum spec - HDMI, USB keybd, SD Card) units for the kids, recycling their existing display/keyboards - as their Dad mentioned recently that he would 'prefer' them to use {Micro}Python - :-( (which I don't "speak" - yet) No great hurry though, I'm content to watch developments as I've got quite a few other things to finish and (TBH) everything is changing so quickly at the moment - which is good as long - as I don't have to keep up with you all! Keep an eye on my Elemento thread, Ian. It uses any 40-pin Pico (from cheap RP2040 clones to the Pico Plus 2W) with HDMI or VGA, with or without USB. It is SMD though, but not difficult stuff. It's upgradable from stage to stage. I'm doing my usual huge documentation job and the prototype just got to the testing stage yesterday. Then there's my modular PC3 that's currently at the advanced design stage. I wouldn't panic too much about the PSRAM. It uses a reasonable pin spacing and, although a bit fiddly, isn't impossible to solder if you've done some SMD work. @IanT if you are located in the UK why not consider Pimoroni and their products. They have really nice prices and offer high quality. Not only for the core board but also all kind of modules. Edited 2026-08-17 20:15 by dddns |

I've just read through your Elemento thread again Mick and I've looked at the Pimoroni Pico Plus 2 W - which is (was) currently selling @ £12.60 (it's out-of-stock atm). I have used Pimoroni, Pi Hut and Waveshare with every satisfaction over the years dddns and have even ordered several different PCB types from JLCPCB successfully. I must admit to being a bit more nervous about ordering fully populated boards though. These days I'm generally happier to use 'modules' as well... Just as a passing comment Mick, I have a basic grasp of CAD (Solid Edge) and have designed simple enclosures for my various 'Mite' projects over the years. So I can produce STLs for custom 3D printable enclosures if required and if it helped 'free-up' the PCB design process for you. Whereas I have no idea whatsoever about PCB layout. I also owe you a favour (or two) Mick. Just a thought. :-) Regards, IanT |

Well, I should have stayed focused on my DRO project - but surfing the Pimoroni site, I noticed that they also had the 'vanilla' Pico2 Plus (with 8Mb PSRAM but no wi-fi) for £9 plus postage - and it's in stock! It also occured to me that since it 'seemed' to be plug & play with the Pico2, there might be a simpler way to upgrade the Grandkids computers by using this product. Anyway - I've ordered one and will have a play. See what I can do with it on the Waveshare 10" HDMI adaptor PCBs that Mick designed for them. Regards, IanT |
