That's good it wouldn't be any good if the Duke of Edinburgh needed a passport to
go to Edinburgh.
What a huge waste of money.

Thank God for that,

I would have had to color in the white cross on my Aussie flags.

I live in Scotland (Ecosse) and believe me the last 2 years have not been great. I have children who live "South of the Border", ie England, and children who live up here, so splitting UK would not have been a great idea (IMHO).

Add to that having to somehow remove St Andrew's cross from the Union Jack, well, who knows where we'd be !

Anyway it looks like the separatists have been shown "what's what" so hopefully for at least 50 years we can all get on with building a united country where everyone regardless of where they live will be treated equally. (sorry about the soapbox, but when you go through the experience where everything which you hold true could be torn asunder brings reality to the fore).

Apologies from a very emotional patriot

Yeah, it's been watched with much interest here in New Zealand too.

I actually thought it would go YES, based on the polls before the actual voting, but I am glad it went to NO - looks like it was a pretty close run thing, though!

New Zealand's turn tomorrow - our General election.
Politicians in overdrive all over the place, promises this way and that, nothing will come of it - it never does. *sigh*

Oh well, we'll see what happens. I will vote anyway - I always make a point of doing that. I seem to remember hearing that voting is compulsory in Australia. Is that so?

Great news.

Next step is to vote Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon out. Sadly, I expect politicians to twist data. Those two lied as well. Disgraceful.

I suppose Salmond will now be a bad loser.

Scotland's a great place with lovely people. Every trip (hols & business) has been memorable and I encourage anyone thinking of going to do so.

Careful guys, the forum admin ( me ) has a low tolerance for political discussion. If the threads start to sound like a rant or would provoke arguments, it will get deleted.

That said, I was undecided on the topic. But the world has a few other issues at the moment, and when so people tend to keep the domestic situation as it is. Maybe in a few years.

Yes Grogster voting is compulsory in Australia.

I'd better ask this quick then, Gizmo, before things go bad!

How do they enforce compulsory voting in Australia?

I only ask as I am curious, and our Government election is tomorrow.
Here in New Zealand, voting is optional - you don't have to vote, but you are encouraged to. There is no penalty or otherwise if you don't.

Its a fine. I missed a local government election once, fine was about $150.

Even though I've been fined, I still agree with compulsory voting. There are many options, you can vote early, by mail, etc. I think forcing the people to vote means the people can take responsibility for who's in power. I can bet people in countries without compulsory voting, who dont vote, complain about their government. You shouldn't complain if you didn't vote.

Absolutely.

Here in New Zealand, I think it SHOULD be compulsory, just as it is for Australia.
However, now I am being political!!!!!!

We have a major problem over here with voting because it is NOT compulsory. Many people simply don't even bother anymore. This can be a really serious problem - if only half of the populace are voting, Government can be determined by only those votes, and that is not necessarily "The will of the people", as only some have voted.

I know someone who when sent the 'Why didn't you vote' letter.

Replied - 'My wife failed to remind me to vote' - which apparently was adequate to avoid the fine.

Well gentlemen, we were not so fortunate as Britons are. Some political idiots disintegrate Czechoslovakia to the Czech (10Mio citizens) and Slovak with 5 Million inhabitants (less people then live in Toronto area)Republic.

The initial request was split the country even to the 3 parts. But the Moravian's still keep trying. The only result is that many Slovak people are living, working and studying in the Czech Republic and they're still blaming the "bloody" Czechs.

Regards
Bo
