Lads,

I just got one of the `chinese Companies' emails and they have a range of interesting PC boxes, starting at $119US with win 8.1 and Office. They say the Windows and Office are legit...

PCs with Win 8.1

There is a nice one there at $127US that has USB3 as well.

These are mainly targetting Home Media but would be quite useful as small PCs IMHO.. They come with a 32GB SSD which would suffice if all other progs are installed to an external HDD.

Regards,

Mick

One of the big pricing tricks here is Windows 8.1 with Bing. OEMs are obliged to install this to get special reduced prices from Microsoft. I believe that it is easy to remove Bing, if you wish, and insert any other search provider, map supplier etc. I can't recall for sure but it may also be a 32 bit version of Windoze.

You obviously have way more programs than I do ..
Win8 takes about 8 or 10 GB (I think)
Those say 32GB ROM .... I hope the "ROM" is a language snafu

$109 Win8 mini PC

Crikey.

Only 16GB SSD in this one, but that would be enough for a basic HTPC setup.

I'm on the lookout for a solution for streaming Netflix. So one of these may be just the thing. I'll have to wait until my ISP actually comes clean with it all instead of just tease announcements. I may have to use their PVR.

Also calling it "ROM"

I hope by "storage" the one I ordered doesn't mean ROM ....

it says
2GB RAM + eMMC 16GB ROM
eMMC is flash memory, like an SD card, works good for a camera.
eMMC = slow, SSD is fast.

It totally depends on what you are going to use it for if that is a problem or not.
For a set top box playing media and occasional browsing it should work just fine.
Running Office, might be a bit slow to be comfortable.

I cannot use laptops because I often spill
beer on the keyboard....Not too bad with a
$10 keyboard, but expensive with a laptop

WTF??? If you must do that, plug in a (USB) keyboard then that's all you ruin. They're very affordable.

That is so annoying and it gets expensive even with cheap keyboards. You could try one of these.

It's not a great idea to roll them up as some of them are hard to flatten again, although if you sleep face down on them for several hours it sorts them out.

The machine is working well so far.
Win8.1 is awkward after a couple of years of Linux .....
