I downloaded and installed it last week without paying money. Is it limited until I pay?

I downloaded a few weeks ago when it appeared to be free for non commercial use(watermark on the output). It worked and let me play around with it. I updated to latest version a bit later and it still seemed to work , but I tried it yesterday, it is now a timed out demo even after another down load.It seems like this non commercial use with a water mark is not now the case, just a timed demo.
I was just about to buy it so Mick's message has just saved me US$10 as I now have it.

Regards
Gerry

A bit of a search and here is the situation.

AutoTRAX version 6 is no longer free.

You can download version 5 from http://kov.com/DexDownloads/DEX_NonCommercial.exe
This is the last version that is free for non-commercial use. If you use this and do not wish it to update to version 6 simply click no. You will now be asked again. So keep of copy of this.

Version 6 loads up a lot faster than 5 versions and contains over 3000 modifications/improvements to the code base.

I don't know what was intended on the AutoTRAX DEX website, but Easter is April 5th this year, not May 5th.

Quote  You can download version 5 from http://kov.com/DexDownloads/DEX_NonCommercial.exe
This is the last version that is free for non-commercial use.

I tried to install this NonCommercial edition and it comes up "Trial Expired". Had to reload the 5.06.06 edition I downloaded on March 13th in order to have a working copy again.

I've just "invested".

Can you give a very quick guide how to get started and install the various parts you have created. Are there any more parts you can share?

Thanks

Peter

Hi All,

Yes as of version 6 there is no free use any more.. You pay or you don't use it... Ver 5 in the archives is free and is still allowed to be used but will not get any updates and improvements...

@Peter,

I am on my iPad at the moment and it's difficult to type but I will reply after i get back home.. About to leave now for a few hours.

But I suggest you watch some of the videos on Kov.com they are plentiful and rather clear and probably in your accent...

Tested the "DEX_NonCommercial.exe" install again. If I try to install it on my computer that already has a older edition (5.06.06 March 13th edition) then it announces "Oh No" Trial Expired and I am unable to start the program. If I load it on a "clean" computer it installs just fine. However, I am left with the feeling it may time out at some time in the future too.

Just set the date ahead on the computer which installed the "DEX_NonCommercial.exe" and it DID expire.

That has to be my circumstances. I installed Autotrax first time last week and it was v6. So it is on trial.

Is there anything out there that is better or free but not necessarily both options.

Hi Curtis,

You could always ask the author.. He has openly stated that the version 5 (later versions anyway of 5) will be free for non-commercial use.. I suspect it is some oversight or other..

Incidentally after you pay for DEX you get 12mths of free updates, after the 12mths you can still use DEX as long as you dont update it it to a later version.. a further 12mth updates costs $29US.. I just renewed my update license.

Peter,

To use my libraries, first find the directory that has the libraries. In my case it is held in:

"C:\Users\MIK\AppData\Roaming\AutoTRAX Software\DEX\Library

Then create a directory (I suggest MIK) and un compress my libs into that directory. Dex should see them when it loads up.

Now how to start using DEX.. Hmm that is not as simple a question as one would think..

Basically you have an idea of what you wish to design first (maybe a cct on scrap of paper)

You start your design in the Schematic section and open the library panel (a button on the top row) which will bring a library directory structure on the LHS of screen.. click and drag the parts you want onto the blank schematic page and arrange them as you like.

Then you create your connections by simply clicking and dragging the cursor from pin to pin..

After you are happy with your schematic click the PCB section You will see a board (way too big generally) outline and your parts location around its periphery. drag the parts to where you would like them to be (or use auto-arrange) and when happy you will see the parts in the layout you like and the nets are showing the connections between pads etc. You can either do an auto route of all nets (which is pretty horrible quite frankly but you can edit/move rearrange these to suit your likings) or just manually do your routes.

Look at the various video clips listed HERE !! for more detailed information.

Basically it gets easier the more you do,

Regards,

Mick

Mick

Sorry badly worded question - it was just installing the parts I was struggling with which you have answered perfectly, I wasn't asking for a complete tutorial on use - I'll certainly get stuck into the videos to learn the program proper.

Thanks

For now, the version I have is fine and I tested it to make sure it does not time out. Personally, I feel the regular $49 price is a fair price, but I want to make sure I can and will use it before I spend the money.

I've been watching the tutorial videos, which are very good. However, I think it's going to take a personal project of my own to give me a goal to focus on and work toward.

Mick,
I've decided to part with some cash and give Autotrex DAX a go too. When I downloaded it and received the software key back by e-mail there was a link in the e-mail to download 100,000 library files! Are these "the" major set or would you recommend loading different ones - apart from yours of course which naturally come first

Hi Greg,

I am starting to think I should get a commission for referrals..

I would recommend you downloading the Libs... And the eagle ones..

Personally I think the parts are a terrible mixed bunch.. Some are good some are woeful .. And few have 3d images..

The good thing us they can be editted to suit fairly easily but this takes time of course..

Hence me doing my own libraries... Which will keep increasing as time goes by..

The internal parts are excellent and have great 3d footprints etc.

Great, thanks for the recommendation. From my very limited reading so far it looks like they've made it half-way easy to edit things at least - and then drop them into your own library. Famous last words probably but I'll have to give it a go sometime!
