Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I am keen to understand from as many TBS members as possible as to what is your favourite Serial Terminal program that you use most often. This is with respect to controlling external hardware - things that have a basic ASCII communication requirement such as devices like the MicroMite.

For many Windows users HyperTerminal and TeraTerm seem to be the most common. However there are many other applications available if you do a search online.

So my aim is to find out if there are any popular 'alternatives' to TeraTerm and HyperTerminal - not only for Windows, but for Mac too.

Interested in little gems like wireless (WiFi or Bluetooth) and other less known techniques that are being used reliably out there.

Please can anyone replying let me know which OS you are using too, as well as the reason you are using whatever Serial Terminal!

Thanks in advance to any responses . . . .

WW

PS: May I add that I wish to load a Serial Terminal onto a Microsoft Surface 3 tablet. Has anyone out there done this already? If so, what did you use?? Edited by WhiteWizzard 2015-08-07

I was initiated with Putty and still use it a bit on Linux but Teraterm is my preference in Windows.

I use Mocha Telnet lite on my Android devices but it is restricted to TCPIP.
Most of my gadgets hang of RPi's running ser2net so it's not a big problem.

I wrote a terminal program for CP/M a long time ago.
It was huge - 512 bytes and most of that was taken up with macros.

WINDOWS 7-64 BIT,

Teraterm for MM,
Realterm for ChipKIT / Arduino,
PICKit2 UART Tool for other PIC's

On my most wanted list: An Android App that supports VT100 via Serial.

Will probably tend to use TeraTerm for more than just MM in future.

Cheers

There are several on the Play store that do TV100 over Bluetooth but non, that I have found, do VT100 serial Via the USB OTG with a USB Serial converter.

Lots of terminal emulators for that but no VT100 Support.

On Linux, moserial is good although I haven't actually tried it with a MM.

It can be easily installed in most distos using their package manager. To install in Ubuntu type the following into a terminal window.
sudo apt-get install moserial

Linux here, so it's putty for the terminal (for the full screen editor, mainly), but I'm also using Moni (a Tcl/Tk program, so it'd work also under Windows or MacOS-X), for capturing logs, saving programs to file and sending programs (with AUTOSAVE) to the Micromite; Moni is not a true terminal however (so you can't use the Micromite full screen editor with it), but it covers features lacking from putty...
