Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Sad news when you saw what it grew from.

Dick (the real one) must be disappointed.

For overseas members, Dick Smith was a pioneer in the Electronics Industry way before the first PCs appeared. He sold it and moved on, however it seems to have gone backwards from that day on.

Cheers Don...

Thats a shame, end of a wonderful era. Its a shame it was turned into another Harvey Norman, and turned its back on the hobbiest market.

Yes, end of an era, even if in name only.

Fond memories of the original Dick Smith.
For crying out loud, all I wanted to do was flash this blasted LED.

Yeah, that was on the national news here tonight - a surprise, but not entirely unexpected. One lives in hope that they could find a buyer. But at the end of the day, who wants to buy a business with hundreds of millions of debt....

I remember going to Dick Smith when I was just a nipper, as mentioned before on other threads, to get my Funway Into Electronics supplies, and doing all those projects before moving on to more advanced kits. Now I am designing and selling kits myself, albeit in a much smaller capacity, but there you go.

I have not really had anything to do with Dick Smith since they restructured and stopped selling components to the hobbyists. That was a few years ago now. Jaycar became my #1 supplier from that point on, and that was before Jaycar even had a store here - I used to mail-order all my bits from them.

Sweet dreams are made of this......

Was chatting to a friend. We realised something...

Dick Smith was bought by Woolworths, made a mess of, sold at a loss, and now going down.

Tandy Electronics was bought by Woolworths, made a mess of, converted to Dick Smith outlets, and we know the rest.

Masters Hardware is also owner by Woolworths, and its going down too.

Starting to see a pattern here. But as long as the share price is good and all those hard working share holders get their dividend payments, who cares about the employees.

I remember going to Dicks in Atchison St, St Leonards. This was after school. His business was mostly car radios as I recall. He was next to the Wireless Institute of Australia.
I volunteer at a charity that Dick supports financially (a lot of $$).
The closings must be so bitter for him.

There was at least one Dick Smith open here in the U.S. I ordered from them once or twice. I remember being amused by the catalog. I wish I had kept that catalog.
