Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Remember when MP3 player modules used to be $50 or more?

I do.

Now you can get a basic one for 50-cents, assembled, with uSD card slot.

50c MP3 player

Somehow for that price, they have even got a 2W audio amp on it, so hook it to a speaker, and away you go. For the price of these things, I just HAD to get a couple.

This is a very simple playback device, and does not even have a serial interface, just buttons on an ADC pin.

GDP2846 Datasheet (Chinese)

I will have a tinker with these things when they arrive, but for adding simple sounds or music to a project, you can't really get any cheaper then this!

EDIT: Datasheet after running it through Online Document Translator:

English attempt at datasheet

Some of the formatting is wrong in the translation, but you can certainly read more of the translated version then the Chinese version.Edited by Grogster 2018-01-11

Plus an FM tuner on the board.

I THINK you need an external FM radio chip if I decipher the Chinese datasheet correctly. I think there are a few supported FM radio chips it can talk to, but I don't think this is on-board.

I had a reread and I think you are spot on (my mistaken assumption on reading the specs quickly). Given the board has 2 chips the main GDP2846 and another which I assume is the audio amp IC. Then the FM IC must not be loaded.

I use(d) something similar but smaller in the feedback pods that work with my snooker/pool table controller. The pod has an mp3 player + audio amp to play fire-alarm message etc.

This might be nicer as it has everything onboard - will grab some and play

Jeez- it makes you wonder how they can make a profit at all at that price- surely even in bulk, the components have to be worth more than that...

you'll often find some/many of the components used are end-of-reels, surplus, obsolete, or expired stock, available the the people making the boards for just the recyclable materials (gold/copper) value. this is why an assembled product may appear for just a few months, then never be seen again - once key components run out (and the manufacturer may only have a few thousand to start with) there is no ability to make more.

cheers,
rob :-)

@ Boppa: My thoughts EXACTLY.

@ Rob: You probably have that right in this case.
